Ahhhhhh, Ketel One, how I love thee. Ok, I’m going to answer the questions raised by FoolsGold and X Roulette Queen in a minute but first I have to tell you a story about tonight.
In the lobby bar at work we have these eternal flame candles that decorate two walls. I don’t have a picture of them but they’re frosted glass bowls, about the size of cereal bowls, which are hooked up to natural gas. Now, from time to time the flames go out and anyone that’s had gas in their house knows that after a few minutes you can smell it. So anyway, the smell of gas is starting to get pretty bad. Have no fear, here comes a bar back with a matchbook.
Every heard the expression, don’t check for a gas leak with a match? Yep, you guessed it, my boy lights a match and BOOM! Now, here’s where it gets funny. Evidently he learned his lesson because now he’s striking matches and throwing them at the bowls to get them to light. I stood there, on a live game, mesmerized, just waiting for this kid to set the lobby bar on fire.
In the comments for yesterday’s post, FoolsGold and someone else accused me of being unprofessional for calling one of my bacc players a cocksucker. I would love to argue with them but I can’t. They’re absolutely right. There is no excuse for that. Instead, I’m going to try and let you in on my thinking at the time, not as an excuse, but in an attempt to let you into my mind.
First, I want to give you an example that will be relevant for the rest of the story. A woman I didn’t know and had never seen before sits down at my table and I start chatting her up. Turns out she’s George. She only played for about 30 minutes but I made 150 dollars from her. Just to give you an example, for the other seven and half hours of my shift I made 10 dollars.
Now, here is the problem with the Rock in particular and local joints in general. You see the same people every night. This is great for the players that are nice and tip because everyone is glad to see them and you can actually develop a good relationship with them. However, for the fleas, it ruins you’re night because you know you’re working for free.
But it isn’t just the fact that their stiff. They go out of their way to make your job difficult. If you have a full table on Blackjack there’s a good chance that one of the people is an asshole. That isn’t that bad because the odds are, the other six people aren’t. You can go about your business having fun with the other six people and just ignore the asshole. On bacc, this isn’t possible.
I understand that everybody’s job has something about it that sucks; that’s why it’s work. But we all put up with those things because we enjoy getting paid. Some people have jobs that provide them with personal fulfillment but mine isn’t one of them.
I would like for everyone that isn’t a dealer to take a second and mentally put your self in my place. You have to stand for long periods of time doing repetitive work for eight hours. You’re employee doesn’t care enough about you to even make sure the air you breath is clean and they only pay you minimum wage and tell you to fend for yourself. I’m not complaining, I’m telling you what it’s like in my world. I know full well that I pick this business and could leave if I wanted too.
Now, add to this seven people that are openly rude and going out of their way to make doing your job as difficult as possible. To top all of that off, you have been putting up with this behavior for the last 14 months from the same people. From experience you know you’re not getting a fucking dime. Why would I bother trying to make their experience fun?
Imagine myself and six of my friends following you around at work, being rude to you and doing everything we can to make your job as difficult as possible. Now imagine my friends and me showing up every day. For fourteen months. Then imagine your boss telling you he’s going to pay you minimum wage and if you want to make more money then you should get my friends and I to tip you.
You ask why I would say that to players that might tip me. My answer is simple. I know I wasn’t going to get tipped. All of the people at the table were a known quantity. I would never say something like to someone I didn’t know. But seriously, if you’ve stiffed me for fourteen months, I know how the story ends.
Peace, love and good happiness stuff.

Good job on the blog matt, been a while since ive been here. Thanks for keepin us up to speed on the compact.
I loved the cocksucker post, and also enjoyed reading the flames from the players, especially the “get a new job” reply. easier said then done. those of us that actually do what we do feel your pain. and to the players, you are welcome. because we do what we do, you can come and play, for what ever reason you play. whether it is to have fun, escape from your reality, blow off steam, or feed your addiction. doesnt matter to me why you play, but you CAN. we cant play, we have to drive hours to play, but you sure can.
Imagine if you worked in an ice cream shop, and really liked ice cream. you get to sell ice cream all day, watch people enjoy it, have a good time with their friends shairing a sunday, meet and connect with strangers at the ice cream counter discussing the fine points of their favorite flavors etc. but YOU cant have any. on your day off, if you want some ice cream, you have to take a trip to the next closest ice cream shop. Its a local joint, and its the ONLY local joint. raises some uncommon issues.
Now if Matt wants to vent a little, by all means let him, and dont get all holier than thou on him.
OMG he called a cocksucker a cocksucker.
long story short, matt is one of the good guys. 99.99% of the time you will have fun at his table, you will get a trade professional that is good at the craft. he will deal clean and fast and error free, all the while engaging you in conversation and attending to your needs and whims. and yes, after being stiffed by the same bunch of donkeys for a year and a half, he will have a moment of weakness, and speak his mind at the table.
We all wish they had pulled pit 5 instead of 4, but they didnt. Bacc is good for the house, and not good for tokes, we all know that. so at the very least, it is comforting to know that , most ,if not all ,those cocksuckers are DOWN way DOWN. i dont know where they get their endless supply of hundreds from, but it makes me warm inside to know they are loosing their ass. Sure any one of them can have a good day, but they are still DOWN.
When im dealing BJ, i know im gonna make the toke rate, sometimes double it, or triple it or whatever. point is, in my head, as soon as i make the toke rate, i start working for a pit 5 dealer. and when i get scheduled bacc, i know there is a good BJ dealer carrying their weight and most of mine. at least thats how I rationalize it.
now if you are one of those donkey dealers that cant carry your own on a 50$ shoe game, doesnt give a shit, and cant even speak english, you can go die in a fire. but then if thats you, you are not reading this.

A professional demeanor should be maintained at all times irrespective of actual emotions and irrespective of the validity of such emotions.
If you want to call a Super-Stiff a cocksucker right there on the casino floor then whenever a Super-George tips very well, you will be required to start sucking right there on the casino floor.
Don’t you think a middle ground of a frozen in place smile and proper behavior is better. You could just as well have gone over there and given them a really hard hustle without the foul language or you could have gone over there and used a term such as cheapskate and told the whole table to pack up and leave.

Fools gold needs to realize we have no duty to have “a frozen in place smile”. Our job is to deal the game as quickly & efficiently as possible while protecting the house’s assets at all times.Anything else we do above that is in our effort to make a tip.If you have continuosly stiffed me,you get nothing.Baccarat players(90%) are the scum of casinos and bad people in general.

I do agree that most bac players are cock suckers, however we have to be professional at all times. If it was said loud enough where the players heard it, you deserve a write up or suspension. On the other hand if it was just whispered and the players could not hear it, Great Job.

Yes, hardwock. You are quite correct.
I don’t think the dealer and the floor realize how damaging to future tokes such behavior is. When language like that is used by both the dealer and the floor, even George’s will react to it in a negative fashion.
Lonewolf,,, Yes, you DO indeed have a duty to keep your smile frozen in place as you Dummy Up and Deal! That is your job. If the Floor behind you is calling security, you Dummy Up and Deal. You remain polite and you do your job without calling the customers names that should be reserved for the dealer’s break room or quiet whispers inside the pit area.

FoolsGold, your name is very fitting and Crappydealer was right. You have no idea what “dummy up and deal means”.It is funny when customers think they know what your job is and what it entails. All you have to do is look around casinos & see the robotic asian dealers everywhere and know that frozen smiling is NOT part of my job.

>see the robotic Asian dealers everywhere and know that frozen smiling is NOT part of my job
Yes it is. Just as it remains part of their job. Its not being performed, but its still part of their job!

FG: May I ask if you have any experience in the casino industry? May I ask in what industry you are currently employed? It is a display of ignorance and arrogance to assume you know another person’s job better than they do. While I think you may have good intentions it is unwise and in poor form to criticize and reprimand someone when you have never walked in their shoes.
Sidenote: Floors are dealers in a suit. They have all worked as dealers for years before moving into supervision. They know who the cocksuckers are as well as the dealers do. While I’m not in favor of insulting players that may eventually contribute to the toke rate, even if it is a very small amount, calling a spade a spade under your breath where only the incoming dealer hears is no crime. Bacc dealers put up with the most vile behavior and most insulting players in the casino. Players pick their noses, spit on the floor, throw cigarettes on the floor……one wonders what their home must look like. All the while requiring more attention and work, much more than most bj players. They play for days on end, many times in the same clothes. Personal hygiene falls by the wayside. They are known for leaving their small children alone in the hotel during these long playing sessions. Most (certainly not all, but the vast majority) do not tip. Period. Nothing. No matter how hard you work, no matter how nice and accommodating you are, no matter how much money they are winning. If that happened in any other area (the bar, for example) it would be looked at differently. It would be an outrage. How dare that person take up so much of the bartender’s night then not compensate them for their hard work. Yet in pit 5 it happens all day every day. There are some nights when tokes are collected that some games in pit 5 don’t have a single black chip in the box. That’s 3 shifts of dealers and reliefs that couldn’t pull off a black chip with their combined efforts. It is a travesty.
These are issues only someone in the casino industry would know. I am sure you don’t welcome job criticism from someone who has never done your job. Please return the favor.

Hollywood Junkie, maybe this will help. Two of my friends in Tampa have put in for transfers. One was accepted at CC with a demotion, the other, his girlfriend was denied a transfer outright. Go figure.
